Getting component clearance on an attached board (via the bus connector) for the existing CF socket is annoying (but necessary) even with the -03- connectors at 11mm clearance. A second CF on the board would be unlikely to clear components on existing daughter boards unless it were on the top side, which would probably create other difficulties. Implicit in the design of Balloon 2.0x is a 3D board envelope encompassing the CF socket and other connectors. If Balloon 3.xx is to meet its objective of being a plug in replacement for 2.0x then this envelope needs to be kept. Having the CF socket covering chips (as it does on 2.0x) also creates assembly and debug difficulties, it would be a shame to make this worse.
