Be aware that gpe (and I assume Qtopia/Opie etc) assume a 16 bit colour panel. The buttons and other bitmaps done do greyscale (yet?).

Of course you can roll your own ...

I have had X running on the framebuffer in various sizes and have viewed the framebuffer via vnc (I had no panel) so all that works ok and as expected.
