I've done a little more work on the Sony LCD interface this morning. I 
can now confirm that:
- the hardware design actually works, but only when the FFC connector is 
soldered on the right way round (grrrr)
- there was an off-by-one error in the patch, which meant that the 
display was shifted down by one pixel. I have updated the kernel patch 
to fix this.
