Just a note to say that usb speakers on L3 seem to work a treat with 
madplay. These were Trust speakers costing very little and bus powered - 
total draw 190ma from psu at moderate volume.

And BTW .. that was with 2 versions of madplay running, one outputting via 
internal codec (no speaker attached) and one via usb. No glitches.
