I think you're clear of these old headaches -- with 2.6.20 MTD 
and the current Yaffs code, that includes yaffs_mtdif1.c, all 
should work "out-of-the-box".  And the problems you saw are
very probably as you say -- artifacts of the MTD_OOB_AUTO read
behaviour.
