Ballooners

I managed to get a build together with r1260 of trunk using Ubuntu.

I'm trying to build for CUED.

With 1293 I get at least the following problems:
1) Sanity check to only build with Lenny. That surely creates an undesirable 
limitation. 
2) Problem with missing Makefile.local meaning no VARIANT defined  causing a 
wonky series file.

I'm going back to 1260 for now...
