Yes you can compile yaffs as a kernel module. I do that all the time for 
testing yaffs2 in a Ubuntu system.

There is one "wrinkle" to doing this: you need to manually set up a link to 
the appropraite yportenv.h version.

$ ln -s  yportenv_multi.h yportenv.h
$make

You will of course need all the kernel dev headers etc.
