There is support for Kernels >= 2.4.27 in a frozen version.
2.4.18 is ancient, obsolete and known to be broken. It's your decision
to use a broken kernel. Don't expect that the community takes care of
that.
Linux is a moving target and you _cannot_ expect that features which are
introduced in version X are per se backportable to any random outdated
kernel.
Tell me one real plausible reason why you can't move to an up to date
kernel version and therefor the community should take care of that
issue.
