That is one way to do it, but the utilities generally need to be tweaked for
the set-up you are using.

If you are using Linux then a far simpler approach is to do the following:
* Use mtdutils to erase the partition (this is the same as formatting for
yaffs).
* Mount
* Use tar, cp etc to copy on the files you want.
* Use regular fs test tools to run any tests you want.
