That is on the Wiki too - use the configscript.sh to run the dash
preinst as well as set the DEBCONF environment variables. If you're
installing Squeeze or later, shadow has been improved such that the
security hole we used to use to set the root password for multiple
machines is now closed. I've failed to find a way to reliably set the
root password without some level of interaction and the consequences of
not setting it (a random root password) are sufficiently serious that I
can't recommend using methods which try to use other security holes -
including trying to set the hash directly using a file or debconf.
