I just noticed something. If I use a LART/JTUX dongle connected to the
CPU chain then bflash detects the correct device ID )(before
segfaulting as described in last mail). If I use the Xilinx device
then it reads 0.

If I plug either device into the CPLD chain then bflash reads 0.

This suggests that it is currently configured to use the LART device,
on the CPU chain - but I can't work out which bit of the code sets
this. (well, the jflash paramater code apparently does, but I'm not
using that).

The other thing I don't see is how to tell bflash that you want to use
the other chain, and thus expect a different device (apart from
rebuilding it). Or indeed which jtag 'cable' is in use.
